Hardwood flooring – a primer

There are two groups of hardwood available: Solid and engineered hardwood with two different types in each: Domestic and exotic.
  • Solid wood planks are made with each plank being one single piece. Solid wood is easily stained in a host of colors and finished in different styles and designs. Over time when the floors lose their original fresh luster, they can be sanded and refinished. This refinishing process costs far less than installing a completely new floor making them an excellent investment. Note that solid hardwood must be kept in the room it will be installed in prior to installation for several days to acclimate to the temperature. Our installers also leave a small gap between every plank to allow for normal contraction and expansion. Solid hardwood should not be used below grade or in a basement, only a grade or above level.
  • Engineered wood planks are made with a number of tiers that are glued to each other and squeezed under very high temperature and pressure. This creates strong, long-lasting floors. Engineered hardwood floors can also be stained and finished to match your style and design. It also can be sanded and refinished like solid hardwood, just not as many times. Because of its construction engineered hardwood is a good choice for below grade applications such as basements as well as at grade or above grade.
